Welcome to the EKO Haiti Photographic database. With photographs dating back to the 1880s up to the present and including a wide variety of subjects pertaining to all aspects of life in Haiti, our database is the largest crowdsourced searchable photographic archive dedicated to Haiti.

Photographs contained in this database have either been acquired directly from their authors or the public domain under Creative Commons Licences. The licence type for each photograph is available in the image Metadata (under the photograph) and we ask users to follow the CC licence rules when using the image. For images labelled as 'UNLICENSED', we kindly ask users that these photographs are cited 'Courtesy of the EKO Haiti Archives'.

Mezanmi (2008)

A young woman pregnant with her first child unintentionally gives birth on the floor just in front of the Maternity Yard of the MSF Jude Anne Hospital. The woman who had been in labour for only a couple of hours did not feel that the baby was about to come out and only had time to sit on the floor. Seconds after this image was taken the MSF staff took care of the newborn and the mother and both were fine and healthy. It is a shocking yet beautiful moment.
