Haitian Forest

Forest zone in Haiti. We usually encounter those kind of trees in arid area.

Charcoal Market, Haiti

Deforestation in Haiti is exacerbating the effects of climate change and variability. One of the main causes of deforestation in the country is the use of wood to produce charcoal—which is the main source of energy for the poorest residents in informal settlements.

Tree planting

A team of young people in the village of Cyvadier, near Jacmel, on the southern coast of Haiti, are planting new trees as fast as they can – 10,000 so far, with the goal of planting more than 80,000!

A hillside in Haiti

Zapoten, A hillside in Haiti. Notice only pines remain. All hardwoods have been harvested for charcoal.

Rising Water

In the passed decade or so, Haiti had undergone a major deforestation because of the production of coal. The lack of trees available to soak up fresh rain water causes landslides and flooding.

River and Fruit trees.

Viewing a river and some fruit trees from a forested zone in Haiti.

Tunnel of Green

Haiti is something like 70% or more (I’m not sure what it is) deforested. We were lucky enough the see part of the provinces that are still lush and jungle-like on a trip to provide medicine to a rural village.

Pristine Ile-a-Vache Beach

Viewing of a beautiful beach from Ile-a-Vache, Haiti. See also a lot of coconuts and other trees in the area.

Shada, Cap-Haitien

Shada, one of the poorest communities in Cap-Haitien, is a shanty town where infection and disease are rampant.

Cadrasse Beach, Haiti

There’s another side to Haiti; one that stands in stark contrast to the perpetually negative image put forth by the mainstream media. Beautiful beaches, breathtaking natural wonders.
