Écrite plus de dix ans avant le bouleversant Gouverneurs de la rosée, La montagne ensorcelée pose les fondations du chef d’oeuvre à venir, puisqu’il narre la vie d’un village perché sur le flanc d’une montagne en proie à la sécheresse et à la pauvreté. À ces maux quotidiens du village, s’ajoute une série de morts curieuses qui suscitent les interrogations, propagent la panique et réveillent les superstitions parmi les habitants, qui tournent tous alors leur regard vers la même personne. La galerie de personnages brossée par Jacques Roumain dans cette nouvelle et dans sa prose de jeunesse La proie et l’ombre, compose un tableau profondément humain de Haïti, duquel s’échappent des fulgurances poétiques entremêlant créole et français. L’essai et les poèmes qui complètent ce recueil se font écho à travers le thème central de l’homme noir et plus généralement de l’humanité.

Oral histories are a powerful tool in developing historical understanding
Oral history offers an alternative to conventional history, filling gaps in traditional research with personal accounts of historically significant events or simply life in a specific place and time. Oral histories do more than provide charming details to dry historical accounts. In fact, oral histories help others recapture lived experiences that are not written down in traditional sources.
